Medical
Presbyterian Hospital East Expansion, Albuquerque, NM
The Albuquerque Presbyterian
Hospital East Expansion project is a $40 million, 150,000 s.f., three-phase
expansion. The project scope provides construction documents for a 5th, 6th
and 7th floor addition to be built on top of the existing east expansion,
originally constructed in 1980, and designed by Chavez-Grieves.
Chavez-Grieves is providing
construction documents to support utility infrastructure upgrades to service
the addition and documents describing the required seismic upgrades at the
existing east expansion. The seismic upgrades are necessary because the seismic
design loads required by the building code have significantly increased since
1980. The CG team provided intensive coordination and value engineering during
the design and bidding process, as well as construction administration, including
site observations, shop drawing review and contractor assistance.
Chavez-Grieves proposed
a structural system that has elevated floors with structural concrete over
a composite metal deck supported by composite steel beams and composite steel
girders. The roof includes a metal deck over steel joists and steel beams
supported by steel girders, and the vertical support system will have steel
columns. The lateral system includes steel braced frames.
Presbyterian Hospital is the largest acute care hospital in New Mexico, and
serves as a major tertiary medical center for the state. It operates in a
mixed business and residential area at the geographic center of Albuquerque.
Critical Care Pavilion, University of New Mexico Hospital, Albuquerque, NM
Chavez-Grieves provided
structural design through construction administration for an addition to the
existing hospital complex, the Children's Hospital and Critical Care Pavilion.
It consists of a six-story addition programmed at 395,425 gsf. It is located
west of the existing hospital, on the site between the existing building and
the primary parking structure. This site initiates a total replacement strategy
for the future development of the hospital and reorients access to the medical
campus. Four primary programs are included: the Children's Hospital, Adult
Critical Care, Birthing Center and Emergency Department. A heliport has been
incorporated into the new facility. Appropriate infrastructure was designed
to support modern technologies, clinical education and limited research functions.
A small food service emporium is also included. The building was designed
to be flexible, energy efficient and easy to maintain.
The Pavilion includes connection to campus steam and chilled water plants
through the University service tunnel, as well as connection to UNMH's physical
plant for all other utilities. The work includes landscaping, hardscaping,
grading, drainage and the removal of existing buildings. It also includes
design of a new entry from Lomas Blvd. via Yale, to the hospital parking garage
and demolition of the UNM "north" chiller plant. The Children's
Hospital and Critical Care Pavilion are being constructed in phases so that
safe access and the full range of services are maintained at all times.
